As a global market leader in motorsport simulation technology, BallRacing Developments has been able to successfully meet, if not exceed, the expectations of its clients in the simulator conversion of motorsport cars for high-profile, brand-promoting exhibitions and road shows, and also in the conversion of road cars for driving schools' driver-training simulation.

The technological advances pioneered by BRD enables the conversion of virtually any car into a fully-interactive, PC-based simulator, either permanently or temporarily.

Conversions normally include the unique realism of BRD’s interactive force-feedback steering system, high-quality sound effects and superior graphics. Additional special effects can be installed according to clients’ requirements. These range from operational headlights, brake lights and indicators to a working manual gearbox and a motion system which, by replacing the shock absorbers with an electric actuator system, replicates actual car movement in high-speed conditions, whether on a road or cross-country rally terrain

BRD car simulators are proving increasingly popular not only in race-driver training, but also in road-driver training globally, as the company’ s increasing involvement with road safety agencies around the world continues to confirm.

All BRD simulator conversions are custom-built following discussions with clients to determine their precise requirements and how they might be most cost-effectively met.

BRD takes great care to maintain the appearance of the original car, to such a degree that to the untrained eye it is impossible to detect the conversion. Original car controls are retained, and wires and sensors are hidden within a car’ s existing equipment to ensure that BRD's simulators are the most realistic available

Conversion Elements

A basic permanent conversion would incorporate the following elements:

  • Modifying existing steering column to connect to BRD's purpose-built force-feedback motor assembly. This invariably involves disconnecting the steering column from the steering rack and connecting it through to the force-feedback control with a simple quick-release reversionary coupling. This allows for quick return to normal, so the car can be manoeuvred as normal (in many cases, the car, with its engine retained, can be driven on to its transporter!).
  • Modifying the car’s pedal assembly to allow the installation of high-quality sensors, usually a minimum of 5 million cycles life-span. Normally, BRD fits sensors to the brake and accelerator and/or clutch (if requested). Pedals are otherwise unchanged to keep the authentic feel through the normal spring/cylinders.
  • Fitting a sequential or ‘H’ pattern gearbox arrangement mounted in the correct position.
  • Fitting a switch to the handbrake as appropriate for use in the simulation.
  • Building in a powerful sound system, often using a combination of the current speakers in the car, a big sub-bass unit and or tactile transducers.
  • The installation of a high specification computer in the boot area of the car, along with the power- management systems and control electronics.
  • Ensuring conversion cabling throughout the car is hidden from view.
  • Strict compliance with relevant European Union safety standards (CE).
Note: BRD recommends a regular servicing programme to maximise the performance of its simulators.
